Regional Funding Issues
For many years Shasta County's streets and highways have been funded through user tax fees known as "gas taxes." We pay these taxes when fueling our vehicles. Currently, revenues from gas taxes barely cover maintenance of the existing street and road systems, and there is no money available for road expansions to meet our ever growing needs. As growth continues to occur in our region, it is necessary to consider developing additional local revenue sources to address the impacts of growth. Shasta County RTPA has implemented a partnership with the two counties, the four Cities and Caltrans for a grant intended to develop a revenue program for the state highway system and other major roads.
